How to Buy the Perfect Engagement Ring

Getting engaged is a very big moment for anyone – and if you have been thinking of popping the question over the holidays, you definitely want every element of this special moment to be perfect.

But how do you buy the right engagement ring, though? We have some tips for you.

  • Find a reputable jeweler. Even though Millennials are famous for their affinity for buying a lot of things online, the truth is that a lot of them still want to make the big purchases in store – and the engagement ring definitely qualifies as such. If, however, you prefer buying the ring online, do make sure to find a reputable seller. As many of you know all too well, not everything online is legit, and you don’t want to pay a high price for a ring that will not resist the test of time.

  • Know what you buy. If you decide to buy a diamond ring (which is not necessarily the rule!), be aware of the 4 C’s of diamonds (color, carat, cut, and clarity). Furthermore, you’ll need to decide on the metal you want for your engagement ring and learn the main differences between all your options (sure, yellow gold is really easy to distinguish from white gold, but, for instance, do you know the difference between palladium and platinum?).

  • Know your loved one’s style. The shape of the stone, as well as the style of the ring as a whole matter a lot. This is not a piece of jewelry your fiancée will simply match with one outfit or another – it’s a piece that’s deeply symbolic and a piece that she will wear for the rest of her life. Buy her something she really loves!

  • Which brings us to another very important point: just because everyone these days is wearing white gold and diamonds on their engagement rings, it doesn’t mean that’s what your SO wants as well. At the end of the day, we are all different, and the engagement ring is not about the diamond. It’s about the meaning of the gesture and the personality of the one who will wear it. Think outside the box!

The setting of the stone, the budget, and whether or not you want to customize the ring are all decisions you should make before you make a purchase. Think things through, use your sensibility, but don’t forget that, in the end, this is an emotional purchase – so allow yourself to embrace the beauty of the moment too!
